Type Locality and Naming

The type section is the Puhe 096 well section located at the Qiujiatun Village, west of Shenyang City, Liaoning Province. It was named by Team 103 of Liaoning Geological Exploration Co. in 1958 (unpublished) and surveyed by Liaoxi Brigade of Liaoning Coal Administration and Survey Bureau in 1963. Geographical coordinates of the type section: 41°58′48″N, 123°31′06″E (GPS).

Synonym: The Qiujiatun Fm is synonymous with Santaizi Fm.


Lithology and Thickness

It is characterized by the amaranth sandstones, conglomerates, and grey sandstones intercalated with mudstones. The thickness is 516 m in the type section and varies from 108 m to 516 m in the district.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The Qiujiatun Fm is in faulted contact with the underlying Yanghe Fm.

Upper contact

The Qiujiatun Fm is in faulted contact with the overlying Quaternary deposits.

Regional extent

The formation is distributed in the north area of Shenyang City, Liaoning Province.

Fossils

Ostracodes, bivalves, gastropods (including Gyraulus chiliensis and Buliminus contori), fish, and plants (including Zizyphus, Castanea, Tilia) are found in this formation.
